Kyogamine Date Family Graveyard and Its History

Located at “Kyogamine Date Family Graveyard” are the Zuihoden History Museum, Kansenden (mausoleum for the second Tadamune), Zennoden (mausoleum for the third Tsunamune), Myounkaibyo, and Okosamagobyo as well as Zuihoden, the mausoleum of Date Masamune, the founder of the Date clan.
Zuihoden was designated as a national treasure for being a Momoyama-style mausoleum from the early Edo Period, however, it was burnt down along with the other two mausoleums in 1945 due to an air-raid.

The current Zuihoden, Kansenden and Zennoden were reconstructed and restored between 1974 and 1985 to reproduce the style that was lost in 1945.
At the Zuihoden History Museum, there are exhibitions and narrative explanations of the investigation results of the graveyard excavation which took place at the time of the reconstruction.

Kyogamine is a sacred place of the Date family, and access to Kyogamine was forbidden for a long time, thus, the surrounding environment has been maintained since the feudal government period, and the life and habits of animals and plants inhabiting here are worth seeing.
It is one of the most renowned historical sites of Sendai City for preserving a number of remains and artifacts, such as the 62-step approach, which is said to have expressed the Date family’s producibility, stone lanterns dedicated by chief vassals, and Boshin-war-related monuments.
